Saitek X52 Pro Flight System Controller

Saitek X52 Pro Flight System Controller Review

See more picture

The Saitek X52 Pro Flight System is beautiful! Every time I look at my X52 Pro, I think to myself that I wish I had more games and more time to play with these!

Admittedly, I have only used the Saitek X52 Pro to play HAWX, so I haven't had a wide-variety of testing to put behind this review. I own the Saitek X45 HOTAS and briefly owned the X52 HOTAS, only to return them within a week to buy the Pro version. The X45 HOTAS always bothered me because the action was too stiff and I had issues with keeping the base on my desk while manuevering the stick around. I also had issues sometimes with center/deadzones on the sticks. The X52 just felt CHEAP, which is why I returned it.

The X52 Pro however, is awesome! The build quality is top notch. The buttons have a nice tactile feel to them. The action is smooth and has just the right amount of tension behind it. I *do* plan on playing more HAWX (great game!) along with other games (X-Plane, DCS: Blackhawk and IL-2-Sturmovik). I won't comment on the software since I don't remember what my impressions were when I played with it. Sadly, this stick has been collecting dust for little more than a year since my job has kept me busy working out of town. I used this with Vista, but now I'm running Windows 7. I plan on installing drivers and playing with this again soon!

I'd totally recommend the Saitek X52 Pro to friends, or anybody else who wants a nice HOTAS system, but doesn't want to spend the money on full-fledged simulation equipment.

Second spring causes sticking - Mark Jones -
This controller has added a second tension spring around the yoke making small adjustments when flying almost impossible due to sticking. Another poster has experienced this as well. This one is going back and I will reinstall my old standard x52 which is very smooth.

The best joy sticks I have ever come across, excellent quality, all metal alloy and heavy base so it dose not move around on the table.
Can't review the software it comes with because I prefer my own set up. They are exact copy of an F-16 flight stick and throttle.
Been a flight simmer for years and use a lot of sticks and yokes but the Thrustmaster is the one to get.
It can also has a lot of buttons to be program and I think 3times that with the software installed.

After installing several times my computer would not reconize the Thrustmaster Hotas.
I not know why. I tried first on a Vista system, then on a XP computer.
The folks at The price Pros gave me a full refund no questions asked.

Saitek PS38 Cyborg X Stick

Saitek PS38 Cyborg X Stick Review

See more picture

I was looking for a well-made joystic which has a built-in rudder control and throttle and decided to take a shot at this stick. I was worried that the buttons clustered on top of the stick were too close together along with the "cone-hat" and would be difficult to use as I have a disability which has weakened my fingers. Well..let me tell you..when I put this stick together and tried it with MS Fligh sim X..it was sheer pleasure. The stick feels well made and not heavy. The throttle which is 2 pc levers that can be seperated, was fluid and smooth. It also has a scroll wheel on top of the stick on the bottom of the cone-hat which really is 2 more buttons. I use a throttle-lever for flaps-axis and scroll wheel for elevator-trim. It has a soothing blue light near the the top buttons which matches the blue light in my pc case. The reason I didnt give this stick 5 stars is..1) The joystick is a little too resistant but not that bad, and 2)if you make abrupt movements with the stick, the base may move a little. I hope Saitek will make an adjustment for the spring tension. This stick is a work of engineering art.

Saitek PS38 Cyborg X Stick Feature

  • Trigger four buttons and scroll buttons in head of stick
  • Adjustable POV hat switch that can extend or contract into head of stick
  • 6 buttons on base of stick
  • Dual throttle lever for control of multi-engine aircraft
  • Works with Windows XP XP64, Vista (all versions) and Windows 7

And it even features a folding and removable stick handle for compact, easy storage. Features include: Twin Throttle- control separate engines or assign one throttle to the engine and the other lever to another function such as elevator trim; Tilting head mechanism – tilt the head of the stick to position the buttons exactly where you need them; Adjustable POV hat switch – move the hat switch position in and out to achieve the perfect distance between it and the buttons; Adjustable handle height – increase or decrease the length of the handle to fit your hand size; Adjustable handle angle – position the handle standing straight up or leaning forwards to suit the way you play. Shift button – doubles up the number of assignable buttons on the Cyborg X when using Saitek's SST Programming software; 12 buttons – all your main flying and combat commands at the tip of your fingers; Adjustment tool – stores securely in the stick base. Cyborg X - Would have expected more - Mr. P. B. Jewell - Texas, USA
I purchased the Saitek cyborg X from best buy as it was only more than amazon and I realy wanted to play there and then.

I was really excited to get it out of the box when I got home. It came packaged very well, everything was secure, so tightly packed, I would recommend pliers to cut the tie-wraps, so 9/10 for packaging.

When you get the joystick out of the box, you will find that it comes in two pieces. This in itself is quite a unique concept, you will either love it or hate it. I think the idea is so that you can dismantle the cyborg x which allows for great space saving. The great fact that it really takes no more than 5 seconds to put together and take apart is the key. Now for me this wasn't a selling point, I haven't taken it apart since I purchased it, however if you are short on space and would like to put this away, this could be a really usful feature for you. 8/10 for storability.

Right then, the most important part, playability. The only reason I bought the joystick was to play Flight Simulator. I'm going to have to be honest, for me the cyborg x does not do flight simulator any justice. I think if you are using it for an arcade flying game then it would be fine, and would work great right out of the box but for flight simulator, it requires a great deal of tweaking. As a lot of people have already mentioned, the cyborg x does have an unfortunate flaw. There is i slight wobble from the centre of the stick. That is, even with the deadzone completely set to nothing, you could move the stick anywhere up to 5-7mm in any direction before the input will be noticed. This can make landings annoying and perhaps tricky, especially if you are flying with cross winds. I also found that because of the wobble, when the stick does pickup an input, it will typically make large over correctments. This led to several hours of tweaking until I became comfortable and confident to fly in flight simulator. Unfortunately because of this I have to give it a 5/10 for playability.

To summarize, the joystick looks really good, and very unique, and with the blue LEDS on the top, it looks smashing in the dark, but if your looking for a good experience with simulation games, I would personally suggest looking at other options.

good investment - Bradley Buckner - WICHITA, KS, US
I bought this controler to match my Cyborg mouse and Cyborb Command pad and I have to say it was a very wise investment. I mainly play Battlefield 2: Bad Company and I have to say it has inproved my game survilability when flying the chopers. only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the software that comes with it can be a lil bit of a pain in the arse to figure out but so far I haven"t had a problem macroing controls to its many buttons and do-hickies just with the plug/play set up, Im going to be trying this out on some actual flying games and simulators and if its half as good as what I have experiance so far then it was WELL WORTH the money.

Thrustmaster T Flight Hotas X

Thrustmaster T Flight Hotas X Review

I'm a newbie gamer and have only used this this thing a few times, but I can say that it is well built and functions flawlessly as far as I can tell. It's a lot bigger than I was expecting.

I can think of two negatives, both minor and both having to do with whether you use it separately or fastened together.

Maybe it's because I'm a novice, but when I use each part separately I tend to tip them and they move around. I guess I have to learn to calm down and not use so much pressure.

You can also attach the two pieces as shown in the picture which gives it more stability, which I like, but there is no lock. You just insert a tab into a slot and it's kind of a pain. If you get too excited (see above) or if you want to pick them up and move them you have to be careful or they come apart easily and it's a pain to reattach them quickly. The cable connecting the two pieces that's coiled up on the bottom unwinds and gets in the way. I would have given 5 stars if it wasn't for this.

All in all I'm happy with the purchase especially for the money and recommend it.

Saitek X52 Flight Control System

Saitek X52 Flight Control System Review

See more picture

I've had at least 15 years of flight sim games using a joystick under my belt, and this is the best stick I've ever used. I will warn in the blurb area: This is not for young kiddies.

I've gone through a Sidewinder Precision pro, a solid Thrustmaster, and at least 3 'child grade' thurstmaster sticks (including at least one Top Gun). That's just the ones I owned, not even what I've used. This stick, which I bought refurbished for less than new, is on year 5 or 6 without any major signs of wear. The only worn part is the S-video type cable that connects the stick and throttle is getting weak (a fix). I've managed to keep it in shape by not playing like I'm 6 again, it otherwise seems to take care of itself well.

The layout makes pretty good sense. All but a few buttons are on the throttle and stick, and the few that aren't can be used for less vital functions. Real pilots do move their hands to change the flaps, lights, and whatnot. The pinkie switch can be moved up for smaller hands, or kept in the same position for larger hands. The safety on the second button is a godsend, it keeps you from making a mistake on the ground or before you're on target. The two-stage trigger is also a wonderful piece of work. A two stage trigger means there are two pulls in it, pull halfway and one function is done. Pull all the way and another is done. More on that later.

Large hands should fit in the stick just fine, so long as it's not a bear claw in there. The hardest areas to reach are the hats on the front of the throttle and top left of the stick, but even those aren't much trouble, just a quick shift away. The suction cups do a reasonable job of keeping it down if you're on a good surface,

The software is important to the stick because it allows all sorts of amenities to come into play. The mouse on the throttle works once it's installed, and it has a left and right click and a wheel. It's not particularly awesome, but it does let you navigate a map on the screen without removing your hands from the stick. The LEDs can be turned down or off here, stick deadzones can be set(if you need a little play in it, whether it's getting old or you're a little shaky), and the current time put in.

You wouldn't think the time would be important, but it'll save you from getting into the game and realizing it's 4am. There's also a stopwatch on the MFD that can help you keep time to know how far you've flown or when to expect a visual on a target. If you forget your buttons often, you can even tell the software which button does what (and in each of the 3 modes), and when you simultaneously press the i button on the throttle and the button you forgot, it says what it does on the MFD. Nifty.

This set is built for complicated sims. If you're playing an arcade flight game or multi-style game (think Battlefield 1942, Nam, 2, 2142, BC, BC2), get a for your stick, this isn't what you want. The massive amount of buttons and layout wonders are for sims like Flight Simulator or IL2 Sturmovik (one of, if not THE, most complicated WWII combat sims out). I don't do much FS because I find it dull. I like to turn, fight, and send my enemies down in flames. This stick lets me do that very effeciently. Il2 allows machine guns and cannons to be fired seperately or together (cannons are just massive guns, often with very limited ammo). I mentioned the 2 stage trigger earlier. I use the first stage for plain guns as I line up and close in on my target, and then use the second stage for both at once when my guns are on target. That saves ammo and the player an edge. The wide range of motion means that gently pulling on the stick is actually good, because a full-motion pull will send you into a stall of death. The wheels on the throttle are great for rudder and elevator trim, and the slider for prop pitch or fuel mixture changes. There is always something to do with this stick, and no button goes unused.

Saitek updates the drivers and software, and while there was a small gap in 64 bit and very (VERY) early Vista support, they took care of their customers and got the updates down. There's also a community of users that can supply fixes/support for older games on their forums and other websites. Look around and you'll find what you need.

Treat this baby well and she'll return the favor. If I was able to test them (and had money to spare), I would look at a Thrustmaster Cougar or X-65, but even this stick will have a few things you may or may not like better. As it stands, I have no reason to switch, and just have all the money saved by it. Cheaper does not equal cheap.

Needs Modification - J. Heine - Corona, CA
I couldn't seem to play any of my flight games effectively with this stick. The stick will not register pressure until you push it half way to its limit. It's almost impossible to make small adjustments this way. You're forced to have a "meat fist", flopping the stick back in forth, trying to keep something flying level. The magnets (or sensors or whatever), are placed in a way that makes the stick unusable.
It's an easy fix. You can find instructions online. But you have to open it up and mess around. When you see the magnets, it looks almost like a purposefully crappy design, on what would otherwise work great. The magnets are positioned in an obviously stupid way, and you just have to move them. It didn't require any soldering.
I don't see how anyone can use this stick without modifying it. I'm not the type that has to mod everything, but I had no other choice.
I gave this stick 3 stars because it works great after it's modified. Otherwise it would have gotten 1 for being defective in design and unusable.
I do recommend this stick if the price looks good and you don't mind modifying it.
I have heard that the "pro" version of this model has the same problem.

Good so far but some issues though - Dryzzt - Georgia, USA
I like the X52 but for some reason it will not calibrate the joystick to the center, it is stuck in the uppewr left hand corner.

Also, there is no printed manual included, just a dvd and a flyer for the Saitek pedals.

In addition, going to the Saitek website to DL game profiles for FSX and Falcon 4.0 is a pain b/c they do not tell you how to install these profiles. They point you to their forum but trying to search their forum is impossible and fruitless.

I will update this as soon as I get this thing firgured out.

Saitek J24C X45 Flight Control System Joystick and Throttle (USB)

Saitek J24C X45 Flight Control System Joystick and Throttle (USB) Review

See more picture

This HOTAS has more promise than any other joystick or gaming peripheral I've used so far. The programmibility of the stick is awesome by itself. I love the look, the price point, and the button placement design of the hardware. It doesn't work for everyone, so test drive it first before you buy. I've been using this setup for about 5 months now...

When I took this thing out of the box, installed the software (use the saitek site, not the CD!!!) and loaded Mechwarrior 4, I was somewhat dissappointed. The weight of the joystick and throttle cause them to slip and silde with stronger game movements. The rubber pads on the bottom don't really work all that well. With this setup out of the box, in spite of everything I love about it, I give it an unremarkable 1.5 stars.

However, EVERYTHING changed when I decided to mount the two pieces to brackets I fashioned for desk or chair use. By using the mounting holes below the stick and throttle, the x45 became a serious gaming peripheral and buttons that were hard to use before (rudder rocker switch) became easy and almost effortless! The biggest shortcoming of the x45 for me is stability. The mounting bracket solved this.

This is not a joystick for everyone. My hands are a bit smaller, so I had a reach a little more but not uncomfortably for certain buttons. Out of the box, this piece is something of a letddown because of its instability for practical, more aggressive gaming. Slap the HOTAS on a wood and steel bracket, you're ready to rock.

Just don't forget to make a hole for the tension screw on the throttle! I had to take my bracket apart last week to make this change and it's a pain.

Saitek x45 out of box == 1.5 stars
Saitek x45 mounted on bracket == 4.75 stars

Stick and throttle - Roger Haldenby - Lubbock, Texas USA
Bought these through Amazon as used but in almost new condition. I was very happy with the service from the seller, "sniperwolfsguy" and they were delivered promptly, in good shape. I've got more confidence in Amazon than I have in E-Bay.

I'm using them with X-Plane, which is a great simulator. I used to be a professional pilot, lots of time stick and rudder crop-dusters as well as more sophisticated equipment. This unit is responsive with as authentic "feel" as you can expect in something that's hooked up to a computer rather than strapped to a real airframe and powerplant.

Lots of programmable buttons and things for simulating anything from trim to radio to guns to water drops. Rudder controls under the throttle take a bit of getting used to but you can always flash out another 0 for rudder pedals?

If you're trying to fly any simulator with a mouse and keyboard, take a step up and try something like this.

Awesome HOTAS - Anthony M. Wells - Charlotte, NC USA
Just recieved the x45 and I must say it is far more responsive than the newer x52 and x52pro! The rudder control on the throttle is much better than a twist joystick. No problems downloading and installing the drivers orSST software from Saitek. The CD software is no good. Up and running with FS2004 in 10 mins. The x45 is better suited for the tight stick and responsiveness. I hate a sloppy stick. Overall I will use this one until Saitek comes out with a better model. Hopefully fixing the problems with the craftsmanship of the x52, and placing the rudder control back on the throttle. SST programming was very easy to do. Made programs for 10 games in little over an hour.

CH Products Fighterstick USB

CH Products Fighterstick USB Review

See more picture

I just purchased X-Plane 9 for my Mac, and because I'd always wanted one and could now afford it, I bought the Fighterstick to go with it.

My young son fell in love with the stick and the game (but mostly the stick). Because he's awfully rough on the stick, I figured I'd buy an inexpensive one for him, so I bought the Logitech Attack 3 Joystick, thinking that if it worked well enough with X-Plane, I could return the Fighterstick and save some money. (I'm not a hardcore simmer by any means; I'm finally returning to flight simulation after a 10-year absence.) Briefly, it's a decent joystick but it has no trim wheels.

I really, really like that the Fighterstick has trim wheels for elevator and rudder, and it's vastly configurable from within X-Plane. However, I've found that I really want a separate rudder control without having to purchase pedals (trying to take off in a Cessna 172 with no rudder is no fun, due to P-factor, and being unable to correct for crosswinds on landing is also frustrating), so I want a stick with a twist feature (for yaw). Neither the Attack 3 nor the Fighterstick twists. I'm returning both sticks and going with the Thrustmaster T Flight HOTAS X, because it offers a twist as well as a separate throttle. We'll see how that works out. (On the other hand, I just tried it with Warbirds and it works great. Second thoughts...)

I'll be sad to see the Fighterstick go, because IMO this is the gold standard, but I'm just an occasional sim pilot trying to get the most bang for my buck.

CH Products Fighterstick USB Feature

  • USB programmable joystick
  • 3 axis and 24 buttons (three push buttons, one mode switch button, three 4 way hat switches and one 8 way point of view hat)
  • Total of 132 programmable functions with the new Control Manager software (included)
  • Realistic F-16 handle
  • Compatible with Windows 98, 2000, Me, and XP or Mac OS 8.6 and above
Awarded the #1 Joystick in Multimedia World's Readers' Choice Awards, the FlightStick looks and feels just like a real jet stick, built with potentiometers rated to 2 million cycles, sturdy base and fire buttons rated to 10 million shots; when you grab on, you'll feel the difference of CH's quality craftsmanship and durability.

Precise - John Martin - TN
I'm using this stick with a saitek x52 throttle and saitek rudder pedals. The main game I'm playing is Rise Of Flight. This stick is easy to program; I'm using most of the buttons and one rotator for mixture. I reach all the buttons easily except the red button at the top left which is okay because it's still easier to reach than the keyboard. This stick has a great "feel"; it is light but not to light; you always know where the sick is in relation to the vertical. This is the perfect stick for ROF. I've never had a stick with this kind of quality and precision.
